"Li pa ba nou lajan men li ba nou konpa al on bèl eritaj sa" sang Tabou Combo, one of the legendary konpa groups, in the early 1980s in homage to the creator of Compas Direct, Nemours Jean-Baptiste. This beautiful legacy is Haiti's dance music that has delighted the ears and set the legs of several generations tickling since the 1950s, well beyond our borders.
This music with Caribbean spices, much appreciated for its festive, sensual and inviting soul, has a dance identity that can deliciously combine the romanticism of a slow dance with the libertinage of a pelvis filled with desire, embellished with a touch of elegance.
This book enriches Konpa culture by providing dance with a learning method, based on a detailed syllabus and a pedagogy constructed and tested by the couple Cliford and Gaëlle Jasmin, two essential specialists in Caribbean social dances and ambassadors of Konpa dance.
"All About Compas/Konpa Dance" takes you by the hand: history, spelling, psychology, rhythm and musicality, basic movement, typical choreographic movements, from folk genius or even inspired by folklore, to progress in this dance, step by step, from initiation to advanced level. It is supplemented by illustrative videos.
We acknowledge the valuable contributions of Fanfan Ti Bot of Tabou Combo, Serge Rosenthal of Shleu Shleu, Jean Jean-Pierre and Edric Richard Richemond.
In your relationship with konpa, there will be a before and after “All about compas/konpa dance”!
